Comments Policy
We're all adults here, so please behave like one.
I reserve the right edit comments, and to ban anyone from commenting.
This policy is subject to change at any time.
Language
I try to avoid profanity on this site, and you should too. A good guideline: the strongest word I have ever used on this site is "suck" (though I did quote a passage with stronger language here).
Personal References
I strongly discourage referring by name1 to individuals outside the scope of the present discussion, unless one of the following holds:
- They are a public figure.
- They have a website that you can link to which addresses the current topic or a related one.
- Your reference is unequivocally positive.
So, in other words, talking about a government official, blogger, or news personality by name is fine, but talking about a co-worker probably isn't.
1 Or other obvious identifying characteristics.
Personal Attacks
This is a place for discussion, not attack. So don't.
Spam
All spam will be deleted and spammers will be banned.
Comments on posts older than a certain period of time will be closed to users who have not already passed moderation (see below).
Moderation
Comments are moderated by email of the commenter and by IP address. Once a comment has been accepted from an email address, comments from that address will typically no longer require moderation. What this means is that I will require an email address from each of my commenters - see the next section for more information.
I also reserve the right to ban certain ranges of IP addresses and/or require that all posts from various ranges of addresses always require moderation.
Commenter Privacy
I value your privacy almost as much as you do.
If I require you to provide any personally-identifying information (proper name, email address, etc.), it will never be posted publicly on this web site. I will never provide said information to any third party, barring a court order. While I offer the option to save your name, email, and/or URL in a cookie when commenting, I will never use that information to track your visits to this site or provide tracking information to any third party.
Right now, commenting does require a valid email address. I no longer display email addresses along with comments, except when the comment is viewed by an authenticated administrator (i.e. me). So nobody will be able to get your address and send you spam.

Dave probably thought I wouldn't actually say this on his site, but he has such a cute butt. Now that the word is out, he better have eyes in the back of his head to watch out for all the ladies. Ow ow!

Dave
It's true. But Karen's butt is at least as cute as mine.
This brings up the question: does my comments policy now need to address sexual harassment?
